Onychomycosis means fungal infection of the nail. It is the most common nail disease and constitutes about half of all nail abnormalities. This condition can affect the fingernails or toenails. It is estimated that it affects almost 10% of the general population, with an incidence that increases to almost 30% in patients older than 60 years.

With only partial efficacy and several side effects from pharmaceutical options, laser treatment is fast becoming the preferred option for nail fungus eradication. The 980nm/1064nm wavelength laser has shown superior results in nail fungus removal, demonstrating safety and efficacy. Provides excellent results with deep penetration, ensuring effective treatment through the nail, without impacting other surrounding structures.

During the procedure, the pathogens that cause toenail fungus are attacked, allowing the new nail to grow healthy and clear. Unlike some drug-based toenail fungus treatments, laser has no side effects and is a great alternative for many patients who are unable or unwilling to take oral medications. It is completely safe without pain.

The result of the treatment can be achieved in a single or double session, but it depends on the severity of the fungal infection. The result is the growth of new transparent nail structures, therefore it is not immediately visible. However, at approximately 6 to 8 weeks after the initial treatment, the first newly formed transparent nail structures are discernible. If this is not the case, additional treatment could be implemented. A 3rd treatment (approx. 6 – 8 weeks after the 2nd treatment) may be necessary if the fungal infection is very definitive. The final result should be visible in 9 months up to a year.
